Subliminal message example
Subliminal messages are thoughts and ideas that are passed on to us through various means without the conscious mind being able to identify them. The thought is that even though we are not able to perceive them with our conscious mind, our subconscious mind is able to take them in and it will affect us to a certain degree. There have been several different experiments on subliminal messages, some of them which have claimed to show that they work in a variety of different situations and others that show that the effects may be limited to a certain extent.
One example of a subliminal message experiment was done by Dr. Johan Karremans. He intended to prove whether subliminal messages would affect a person’s choice of a brand name whenever they were primed with that name in advance. For his experiment, he took a group of people and split them into two different groups of participants, one which would receive the subliminal messages at that time and a control group that would not. For this particular experiment, he used the drink, Lipton ice within the subliminal messages that were flashed repeatedly at 24 ms intervals on a computer screen. The control group also watched the same information on a computer screen but without the subliminal message attached.
After the experiment was completed, the test subjects were asked whether they were thirsty and given a variety of different choices of what to drink. Of those that said that they were thirsty, a majority of them showed a preference for the Lipton Ice. For those that did not say that they were thirsty after the experiment was complete, they showed no brand preference whenever they were offered the same choice of beverages.
What this experiment helped the show was that subliminal messages do have an effect on an individual but not necessarily one that will affect everybody involved. This showed that these subliminal messages do work whenever they were goal relevant but not necessarily if the subject had no interest in what the subliminal messages were offering.
Since that time, many other experiments of subliminal messages have been done in order to expound on this research. A good example is one that was done in which the word beef was flashed for several intervals during a 16 minute movie. Of those that saw the movie, no preference was shown toward a beef sandwich whenever it was offered as a choice among four other sandwiches. It is interesting to note, however, that many individuals who saw these subliminal messages claimed to be hungry in comparison with those who saw the same movie without the subliminal messages attached.
Although subliminal messages can certainly help in a variety of different ways, they are not something that can be used in every form imaginable. Yes, they can help to manipulate people to a certain extent but research would need to be done in order to see how that manipulation would take place.
