Alpha Wave (Learning Mode)
Just as sound or light travels in waves of various lengths, our brain also uses waves that vary in length as well. These brain waves are able to be measured through the use of an electroencephalogram as well as other machines and can be distinguished from each other according to the length of the wave as well as a few other determining factors. There are several different types of brain waves that are recognized, each of them apparently having its own unique pattern as well as function.
There are four basic types of brain waves that we use. Beta waves are generally recognized whenever a person is alert and working. Theta waves seem to be present whenever an individual is drowsy and delta waves are present whenever a person is sleeping, dreaming or even in a dreamless sleep. Of all of the different types of brain waves, however, a lot of interest has been put on the Alpha brainwave because it is the one that appears whenever we are relaxed or reflecting, perhaps meditating. Although it is possible for us to control these alpha waves to a certain extent and to bring them to the forefront by putting ourselves into a relaxed state, there is a lot of confusion over what exactly these brain waves accomplish.
Some people consider alpha waves to be very beneficial for us as far as learning, relaxing and even for boosting our immune systems. The reason why this is considered to be the case is because an individual that is in a relaxed state or perhaps taking part in a meditative process will display these alpha waves very strongly. As a matter of fact, if a person is in Beta waves mode because they are taking part in some kind of a working process, they will quickly switch to an alpha mode whenever they relax and reflect on what they were doing. This is the time whenever the information that they were taking part in tends to sink in and take hold.
Putting yourself into an alpha wave state is a relatively easy thing to do. Most people consider meditation to be some of the most beneficial time that can be spent and the simple fact of the matter is, our brains quickly switch over to alpha wave whenever we take part in this past time. It is important to understand, however, that strong alpha waves are really only present whenever we are relaxed and reflecting yet not drowsy. If we would happen to open our eyes or become drowsy whenever we are meditating or reflecting, the alpha waves will be diminished and the learning process would diminish along with it.
It is always a good idea to be aware of the brain wave pattern that you are using. If you want to be able to let things sink in and to hang on to them for the long term, make sure that you are reflecting on them meditatively on a regular basis.
